Today our colleges are partnering with healthcare providers, businesses, nonprofits, local schools, and government in ways that would have been difficult to imagine just a few years ago. History

Generations ago, immigrants arrived here with different languages, traditions, and dreams for the future. They built the Delaware & Hudson Railroad, worked in what became the largest railroad roundhouse in the world, opened businesses along Main Street, and raised families whose names still echo through our community today. Every single generation has written a new chapter.

Downtown is compact: restaurants, coffee shops, entertainment, and community events are all a short walk away. You can also find independent shops, the History Center, public art, live music, Muller Plaza, and special events. On campus, SUNY Oneonta offers athletics, concerts, lectures, theatre, and exhibitions; Hartwick offers performances, the Yager Museum, athletics, and public events.

There is more happening in Oneonta than you might think: concerts, theatre, lectures, festivals, college athletics, live music, and dance. Foothills Performing Arts Center, CANO, galleries and museums, public art and murals, campus performances, and festivals bring people together through shared experiences.

Outdoor Recreation

Hartwick’s Pine Lake environmental campus offers trails, water activities, and outdoor events a short drive from Oneonta. Table Rock Trails climb above Hartwick’s campus with views of the City of the Hills. SUNY Oneonta’s College Camp provides hundreds of acres of woods, trails, and outdoor space, while the A.J. Read Science Discovery Center and Hartwick’s Yager Museum add indoor discovery.

Shopping & Dining

Oneonta has shops to discover and the stores you already know. Downtown independents offer books, clothing, gifts, specialty foods, and places uniquely Oneonta. The Southside corridor along Route 23 has familiar names and everyday shopping. Keep your eyes open—some of the best finds are tucked into neighborhoods and shopping areas throughout the city.

Recreation

Hike, bike, paddle, fish, run, ski, golf, swim, or play ball—recreation comes in plenty of forms on campuses, in parks, on trails, and throughout the surrounding countryside. Cheer on the Hawks, the Red Dragons, and the Oneonta Yellow Jackets. In summer, head to Damaschke Field for an Oneonta Outlaws game.
